Narrative + Immersive
Educational
I produced five episodes for Gimlet’s The Pitch over the course of 2020. Here are two episodes I made. The first tells the story of a former truck driver building a startup to innovate the trucking industry. The second is a hotline recorded in the spring of 2020, where we had investors field calls from founders across the globe who were struggling to keep their businesses afloat during the pandemic.
Hosting
I was the lead producer for this interview podcast, where we asked guests to tell us about the biggest mistakes they ever made at work, and what they learned from them. I ran a small team and all aspects of production from developing the concept to polishing the six finished episodes.
Here’s my favorite episode, with the former Chief Talent Officer of Netflix, Patty McCord.
Studio 360
I produced this investigation into the morphing morality standards behind MPAA ratings. It aired on Studio 360. We talked to someone who used to make the ratings, and learned some of the more absurd “rules” that push a film into “R-rated” territory.
The Get Up
I was a producer on The Get Up, Spotify’s daily morning show that mixed news, pop culture, and chit chat with a personalized playlist. Here are some of my favorite segments I made — a few interviews and a trivia game.
The show was featured in Bloomberg Businessweek. It was the most popular new podcast on Spotify when it launched.
Casting Call
One of my main responsibilities when working on Casting Call, a Gimlet Creative x Squarespace podcast, was to pull together the “behind-the-scenes” segments that played before each finalist’s pilot. To get material for that, we recorded pretty much everything we did — edits, check-ins, arguments, first day jitters. I went through all that tape (some dozens of hours) and arranged all of it into tight, emotional arcs for each finalist. This one with Debra still makes me a little teary-eyed.
Chompers
Chompers is a twice-daily toothbrushing show for kids. I wrote the fourteen two-minute episodes that make up Chompers’ Cooking Week. That involved doing things like figuring out how to explain how microwaves work and cooking a meal with the Top Chef Junior champion. In this linked episode, I came up with a variation of the show’s True/False format called “Kitchen Yes or Kitchen Mess,” and tried to keep it fun while teaching kids some basic kitchen safety and etiquette.
StartUp
I reported and produced these two episodes of Gimlet Media's StartUp side-by-side with StartUp host Lisa Chow. In part one, "The Grand Challenge," we dive into the race that jump-started the self-driving car industry. In part two, "The Race for a Driverless Future," we survey the current state of autonomous vehicles.
Faerie Visions
I made an audio documentary about the Radical Faeries of southern Vermont.
The Radical Faeries are a global movement of queer spiritualists that began in 1979. They value communal living, the sanctity of the Earth, radical political action, and a potpourri of alternative spirituality. They gather regularly in rural sanctuaries to have fun, cook, build things, and hold rituals.
